Welcome to the secret history of Immigrant Suns. Recorded in living rooms, basements, lofts, on stage and in between takes for our CDs, this record chronicles the improvisational side of the band. We used tape decks, 4 tracks and ADATs. We played each other's instruments. We worried more about the spirit of the improvisations than tuning, fidelity or being "tight".

Side A

Fixtures (at an exposition) was recorded at Private Studios by Frank Pahl during the More Than Food sessions in 1997.

Tuning Up Overture was recorded by Curtis Settino in his living room in Portland, OR during our 1997 West Coast tour.

Yessir, Mr. Settino I was recorded in the basement of Curtis' newer house in 1998. It features Curtis and Shane McMahon on percussion. Improvising parameters by Curtis.

Transformation was recorded in Ben and Joel's apartment, circa February 1993. It is an excerpt from the very first improvisation we documented. The master tape has been lost over the years.

600 Horsepower In My Van same as Yessir, Mr. Settino.

Gelder's Nightmare was recorded by Frank Pahl at Private Studios during the Montenegro sessions. It was featured in the film short Stand in the Water by Jeremy Schroder. Alto clarinet by Frank.

Wung Hung X was recorded by Curtis Settino and Lawrance Crane at Jackpot! Studio in Portland during the More Than Food sessions.

The Motor Peach was recorded in 1996 by Rob Mallard at Studio 204 in Atlanta, GA. During our first long, grueling tour we found an oasis in Atlanta: the Gold Sparkle Band. This track is a live performance from the first night we met. Unfortunately, we have never heard the entire master tape of this show.

Yes Sir, Mr. Settino II Same as Yes Sir, Mr. Settino I.

Channeling Ives (through loud motors) was recorded in the Capitol Park loft in 1999. The noise of the tapedeck's motor was originally louder than the music, but thanks to Dave Schroder it has been filtered down to a tolerable level.

Side B

Dearborn Electric Epic was recorded on 4-track in Mark and Doug's basement in 1993. It is an excerpt from our second improvisation ever.

Yes Sir, Mr. Settino III same as I & II.

What Can I Wander Into? was recorded on tape deck in Ben's living room in 1999.

The Clanger Banger was recorded at Private Studios by Frank during the More Than Food sessions in 1997.

Come in Monster Zero was recorded by Rob Mallard at Studio 204 in Atlanta. It comes from the same performance as The Motor Peach.

Midnight Motel Pricing in Butte, Montana was recorded by Curtis Settino in his basment during 1998.

Canned Hands was recorded on tape deck at the Capitol Park loft in 1998.
