David Greenberger has consistently redefined how people think of old age with the Duplex Planet, a 'zine he started in 1979. In the pages of the Duplex Planet, he asks quirky, often unintentionally philosophical questions of the residents of the Duplex Planet nursing home and records their surprisingly witty, profound, or outright odd responses, as well as various anecdotes. The 'zine spawned many projects, including a book collection, comic book, and several recordings. Here, Greenberger translates some Duplex Planet material in an organic, expressive way that could only come from having a close bond to the subjects. (The readings are augmented by music by various guests.) This is a world like no other, and episodes such as "Kirk Douglas," wherein an elderly man recounts a childhood experience with his fame-bound classmate that left him with a bent toenail, will have listeners smiling. Nevertheless, the more readily available and more fully realized Duplex Planet Radio Hour (2002, Carrot Top) would be a better starting point for folks new to the world of the Duplex Planet. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide
