Unlike the first installment
in this series, Chadbourne Baptist Church, Vol. 2 had not been released in
this form prior to its appearance in the House of Chadula catalog. This CD
is a collection of tracks released on various singles and anthologies. The
lineup continues to change from one performance to the next -- the idea
behind this project was to hire local musicians each night -- but a good
number of tracks feature the recurring rhythm section of Murray Reams
(drums) and Tom Shephard (Shep the Hep, bass). Nineteen extras appear on
one, two, or three tracks each. The most notable are drummer Michael Zerang
and the group Only a Mother (Doug Gourlay, Frank Pahl, Marko Novachcoff, Tim
Holmes, and Mary Richards). From pseudo-country to avant-blues, this CD
focuses on songs. Highlights include the witty "It Takes Longer Saying Yes
Than Saying No" (straight folk guitar and vocals, completely demented
accompaniment) and "I Cut the Wrong Man." "Alfred HitchWhat Is Truth"
features some nice jamming around the Alfred Hitchcock Presents theme. And
what can be said about the rendition of "Tomorrow" from the musical +Annie?
Sound quality varies and includes an occasional faulty stereo channel,
muffled sound, or crude edits. Not as satisfying as volume one (which was
conceived as a full-fledged album), Chadbourne Baptist Church, Vol. 2 will
mostly appeal to the fans.
